SOOTHING RAIN: Soybean prices dropped as cooler, wet weather offered some relief for crops that have been scorched by the drought. The benefits may be limited, however, because the soybeans may be past the period during which damage can be repaired.

ECONOMIC GAIN?: Industrial metal prices rose after U.S. retail sales were stronger than expected in July. The results raised some expectations that the economy may be improving, which may strengthen demand for metals used in manufactured products.
