Maryland Home, Garden and Craft Show kicks off season

Whether dividing a larger yard into small, themed gardens or designing the perfect patio container garden, the Maryland Home and Garden Show will provide inspiration.

“Pretty much anything you are looking for your home, you can find here,” said Jay Plummer, vice president of S&L Productions, which presents the show. “We also have a lot of things here that you can?t find anywhere else.”

The two-weekend show hosts more than 600 vendors of everything from granite and concrete to flowers and birdhouses. National experts will lead free gardening seminars and interactive demonstrations, and visitors can register to win $15,000 in garden supplies from New Edge Design.

This year?s theme is Home Sweet Home, a focus on small gardens. “We try to tie the garden into the theme,” Plummer said. “It?s really about making the most of your outdoor space.”

The show also boasts the latest and greatest in gardening styles. One trend is placing individual potted plants in a small garden plot. “If [homeowners] have small plots, containerizing plants is the new vogue,” said Bob Jones, president of Carroll Landscaping Inc. and show exhibitor. Homeowners can easily move their plants around and change the pots with the seasons.

Another fun trend is living walls. “It?s a vertical screen made out of plants, and you can use that instead of lattice on your deck. It?s environmentally friendly, and it waters from the top. It?s really interesting,” Plummer said.

The specialty Orchid Show and Sale during the second weekend of the show features more than 50 displays of exotic flowers, along with care supplies and expert advice.

In conjunction with the show, more than 125 local artists and craftspeople will showcase handmade and one-of-a-kind home accessories, artwork, gourmet foods, jewelry and apparel at the Maryland Spring Craft Show.
