A former French spy was found dead with several bullet wounds at a rest stop in the Alps near Lake Geneva.
Police said the killing of Daniel Forestier was a “professional job” and he had been shot five times in the head and heart, according to reports. He lived nine miles from where his body was found, according to local radio station France Bleu. He had a wife and two children, the station said.
The 57-year-old was the author of several spy novels and had been a member of France’s intelligence agency, the General Directorate for External Security, for more than a decade. Police did not give an exact time frame for when he worked for the counterespionage agency.
His death came six months after he was accused of plotting the assassination of an opponent of President Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of the Congo.
A public prosecutor said the killing was likely revenge for the alleged plot to assassinate the opposition figure Gen. Ferdinand Mbaou, the former leader of Congo’s presidential guard.
Forestier had denied involvement in any criminal activity.
