When Joe Arpaio saw Trump’s pardon, he was concerned it was ‘fake’

Former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said he was concerned about the veracity of President Trump’s pardon at first glance.

On Friday, Trump pardoned Arpaio, who was held in criminal contempt of court after violating a federal judge’s orders to stop patrols targeting illegal immigrants.

Arpaio told the Arizona Republic his first impression of the pardon from Trump was concern that it “was a fake.”

But Arpaio added, “I’m very good at investigating fake government documents.”

While Arpaio did not detail what “fake government documents” he was referring to, Trump thanked the former sheriff on Twitter in 2012 for Arpaio’s “investigation which claims @BarackObama’s ‘birth certificate’ is fake.”
