President Trump made light of efforts to undo his predecessor’s agenda on Tuesday as he prepared to pardon his first turkey, joking that the White House’s lawyer had advised against undoing the pardon former President Obama offered to two turkeys last year.
“As many of you know, I have been very active in overturning a number of executive actions by my predecessor,” Trump quipped during the annual turkey pardoning ceremony on Tuesday. “However, I have been informed by the White House Counsel’s Office that Tater and Tot’s pardons cannot under any circumstances be revoked.”
“So, we’re not going to revoke them,” Trump added. “So, Tater and Tot, you can rest easy.”
Trump participated in the decades-old presidential tradition alongside his family in the Rose Garden on Tuesday. He pardoned Drumstick, who will be sent to live with Tater and Tot — the turkeys who were spared from becoming meals last year — at a turkey sanctuary called Gobbler’s Rest in Virginia. Wishbone, the other turkey selected by the White House this year, will join Drumstick on the farm.
