UN Security Council to convene meeting over Syria strike at Russia’s request

The United Nations Security Council will meet Saturday morning at Russia’s request following air strikes on Syria conducted by the U.S., Britain, and France.

“Russia will convene an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the aggressive actions by the US and its allies,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a statement.

The Associated Press, and New York Times first reported the upcoming meeting, citing diplomats.

The strikes launched Friday night involved more than 100 missiles, Pentagon officials said Saturday. The joint effort targeted facilities that officials believe play a key role in Syria’s ability to research, produce and store chemical weapons.

President Trump announced Friday evening that the U.S. launched the strike in response to the chemical attacks carried out against civilians in Syria last weekend.
