NEWARK, Ill. (AP) — A small airplane with two passengers aboard crashed into a field Friday near the LaSalle County community of Newark, authorities said.

The LaSalle County Sheriff’s Department says the single-engine, two-seater crashed around 3:30 p.m., near Cushing Field Limited Airport. The two passengers aboard the aircraft were injured, authorities said. However, the extent of their injuries weren’t immediately known.

The aircraft was attempting to land at Cushing Field, near Route 71 and County Line Road outside Newark, when it became entangled in power lines, which pulled the aircraft to the ground, said LaSalle County Sheriff Tom Templeton. About 1,400 people in the area of the crash lost power due to the downed power lines, according to Ameren.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.

Newark is located about 57 miles southwest of Chicago.
