Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., said Thursday that allegations that Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., sexually assaulted a radio broadcaster in 2006 are “deeply concerning” and expects to hear an explanation.
“They are deeply concerning and I expect to hear more from Sen. Franken,” Gillibrand said. “I think it’s a serious issue and I think it’s very concerning, and we’ll hear more from Sen. Franken.”
Gillibrand said she believes Leeann Tweeden after she alleged that Franken kissed and groped her during a USO tour in 2006. Tweeden posted a picture of Franken posing and appearing to grab her breasts while she was asleep.
Gillibrand declined to say whether Franken should resign or if she agreed with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s call for an investigation by the Senate Ethics Committee into the allegations.
Her comments came at a press conference to promote a bipartisan bill to combat sexual assault in the military.
