Top White House aide Kellyanne Conway claimed that Martin Luther King Jr. would not be in favor of impeaching President Trump.
When asked how the president would be observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Conway said that he was preparing for his trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. She also said Trump is a supporter of King’s vision of unity.
“The president is preparing for Davos and agrees with many of the things that Dr. Martin Luther King stood for and agreed with for many years, including unity and equality,” Conway said. “And he’s not the one trying to tear the country apart through an impeachment process and a lack of substance that really is very shameful at this point.
“I’ve held my opinion on it for a very long time, but when you see the articles of impeachment that came out, I don’t think it was within Dr. King’s vision to have Americans dragged through a process where the president is not going to be removed from office, is not being charged with bribery, extortion, high crimes, or misdemeanors,” she continued.
Conway added, “And I think that anybody who cares about ‘and justice for all’ on today or any day of the year will appreciate the fact that the president now will have a full-throttled defense on the facts.”
On Monday, a day before Trump’s Senate impeachment trial is set to begin, his legal team submitted a brief calling the articles of impeachment against him “an affront to the Constitution” and arguing that the Senate should “speedily reject” them.
