Wisconsin man sentenced to 25 years in prison for sex trafficking

A Wisconsin man was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for sex-trafficking minors in the Chicago area and Wisconsin, according to the Justice Department.

David Smith, 28, took two girls, 16 and 17, to several hotel rooms from late December 2019 to early January 2020, where he took sexually explicit photos of the two and posted the photos as sex advertisements to the websites SkipTheGames and MegaPersonals. Smith would arrange for the two girls to meet customers in hotel rooms and keep any money made by the girls for himself, officials announced.

“Defendant caused his minor victims irreparable harm and trauma by causing them to engage in commercial sex on numerous occasions,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Ann Marie Ursini said. “These victims will carry the emotional scars of the defendant’s actions for the rest of their lives.”

In addition to the prison sentence, Smith was also sentenced to pay $50,000 in restitution to each of his victims. He has already pleaded guilty to a federal sex trafficking charge in 2021, the Justice Department stated.

Smith also hit each of them in the face at least once, according to a filing by FBI agent Michael Barker. Smith hit the 17-year-old girl after she mistakenly accepted a fake $100 bill from a customer and hit the 16-year-old girl after he learned she had contacted her mother.

Police arrested Smith in January 2020 at a hotel room in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, where the two girls were also located. Inside the hotel room, law enforcement recovered ammunition, a clown mask, approximately 2.4 grams of marijuana, and a debit card in Smith’s name, among other items, according to the filing.
