Biden ignored ‘politicized big tech’ in State of the Union, GETTR CEO Jason Miller says

Social media platform GETTR’s CEO Jason Miller issued a response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union calling for more attention to censorship across online platforms.

“Tonight we felt the need to go and offer a response to Biden’s State of the Union to make sure that the issues of free speech, political discrimination, and the rise of a politicized big tech were not ignored even if Joe Biden ignored them from the U.S. Capitol,” Miller said Wednesday.

“What we saw in 2020 and 2021 were the worst years of political discrimination and political censorship in U.S. history,” Miller said.

The CEO pointed to Twitter‘s indefinite ban of former President Donald Trump and Facebook‘s similar two-year ban as examples.

RUSSIAN STATE MEDIA BANNED BY SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS IN EUROPE

“As soon as free speech starts to erode, we see our other freedoms begin to erode,” Miller said.

“We see what’s happening in Canada with the seizing of bank accounts as it pertains to the truck convoy. We see what’s happening in Australia as it pertains to people being locked in their homes for month after month after month, the freedom of movement being taken away. We see what happens in Russia, with free elections being taken away.”

Miller went on to say he noticed many a “missed opportunity” for the president to mention free speech, censorship, and Section 230, the law that eliminates civil and state liability for digital hosts when it comes to third-party posts.

However, he did applaud Biden for inviting Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, calling the move “smart and telling.”

“I still believe in the power of social media to be that tool to bring freedom and democracy to places where we don’t have it and to make sure we preserve those liberties at home,” Miller said.
