WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (AP) — Curling enthusiasts are gathering in Wisconsin Rapids this week for a national tournament with teams from 10 states.
Daily Tribune Media reports (http://wrtnews.co/1dptZG4 ) the USA Curling 2014 Mixed Nationals began Saturday and will have finals on Sunday.
Mike Swanson, of the Tri-City Curling Club, says it has hoped to host a national tournament for years but planning stalled during the recession.
He says the club set its sights on the Mixed Nationals because it’s a small tournament with about 40 players. He says the club hopes to host larger events in the future.
Visit Wisconsin Rapids Executive Director Laura Nelson says even a small tournament is putting the area on the map with curling players and helping the local economy.
