Republican Mike Rogers secured the GOP nomination for Michigan‘s open Senate seat on Tuesday as he was unopposed in the primary, setting up a closely watched general election matchup that could determine control of the chamber.

Rogers, a former FBI special agent who later chaired the House Intelligence Committee during seven terms in Congress, entered the race as the overwhelming favorite for the GOP nomination after quickly consolidating support from President Donald Trump and national Republican leaders. With no Republican challenger, Rogers was able to devote much of the primary campaign to preparing for the fall general election.
