Schumer blasts Trump over the Cohen raid: ‘Your comments were the disgrace’

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., hit President Trump Tuesday over his response to the FBI’s raid of the office of Michael Cohen, Trump’s personal attorney, at the request of special counsel Robert Mueller.

Soon after the news emerged Monday, Trump slammed the actions, calling them a “disgrace” and noted that many people have told him to fire Mueller. Schumer fired back Tuesday, calling Trump’s comments the real disgrace.

“Mr. President. you have it wrong,” Schumer said on the Senate floor. “Interfering with the investigation would be a disgrace. Calling it an attack on our country is a disgrace.”

“Mr. President, your comments were the disgrace,” Schumer added.

Schumer warned Trump against firing the special counsel or having any contact with the U.S. attorney of the Southern District of New York, whose office conducted the raid of Cohen’s office on Monday at Mueller’s behest.

“President Trump should not have any contact, any contact, with the U.S. attorney in the Southern District, with his office, or with the Department of Justice officials overseeing an investigation of Mr. Cohen,” Schumer said. “Any attempted contact by the president or the White House should be reported to the Department of Justice immediately.”

Schumer also reiterated his call for the Senate to pass legislation to protect Mueller from being removed. Republicans have said in the past that bringing up legislation is not necessary.
