A man has been charged with taking a rifle from a police vehicle.
Montgomery County police allege that Stephen Garland, 32, of the 22000 block of New Hampshire Avenue in Brooke-ville, took a gun, ammunition, handcuffs and other equipment from an unmarked police vehicle in Brookeville between 9 p.m. on June 28 and 5:30 a.m. on June 29.
Garland was first identified as a suspect in an earlier theft from a vehicle. He was then arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of drugs on July 5.
The address he gave was near the location of the thefts and authorities found a glove identical to one missing from the officer’s vehicle in Garland’s home, police said.
The rifle has been recovered but other equipment is still missing, police said. – Emily Babay
