The U.S. government is beginning a campaign to prevent counterfeiting by increasing awareness about the new $100 bill that will begin circulating next year.
The government debuted a video last week on a new Web site — newmoney.gov — that explains how to detect a counterfeit bill.
Viewers can learn about security features in the new note, common tricks counterfeiters use and what businesses and individuals should do if they suspect a bill is a fake.
“By knowing those features, businesses and consumers can be confident they are accepting a genuine note,” Kenneth Jenkins, a Secret Service special agent, said in a statement.
The new $100 notes will begin circulating on Feb. 10, 2011.
