D.C. man files police complaint over robbery
D.C. police are investigating a complaint by a citizen who said officers tried to dissuade him from filing an armed robbery report. Matt Ashburn, the owner of the Capital City Diner, said he and two friends were walking home Sunday in the Trinidad neighborhood when four or five young people approached them, showed what appeared to be a sawed-off shotgun and demanded money.
The victims said a detective said the incident didn’t rise to the level of a robbery because the suspect did not reach into the victim’s pockets. The detective then asked whether Ashburn really wanted to pursue the matter because the suspects might retaliate, Ashburn said. They ended up filing a complaint for robbery by fear. Assistant Chief Diane Groomes said the department was taking the complaint seriously and developing leads in the armed robbery.
