A Loudoun County driver’s education teacher was charged after he was found intoxicated at Broad Run High School, officials said.
Michael L. Hitzges, 47, of Ashburn, was charged with being drunk in public Monday. He was arrested after Broad Run personnel notified a school-resource officer that a teacher may have been under the influence of alcohol, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
Hitzges has worked for Loudoun County Public Schools since 2002 and has taught at Broad Run since 2004. He is primarily a science teacher and also teaches driver’s ed, schools spokesman Wayde Byard said.
At the time that school staff reported the incident, Hitzges was at Broad Run but was not in front of a class, Byard said. Hitzges has been placed on paid leave.
