Former Alexandria Sheriff James Dunning was found dead at his home in Hilton Head Island, S.C., on Thursday morning.
A Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said the 62-year-old’s death doesn’t appear suspicious, and an autopsy should be completed by next week.

Dunning was the husband of real estate agent Nancy Dunning, whose murder in December 2003 remains unsolved.
Police believe that Nancy Dunning, known as the Queen of Del Ray, was shot to death by someone she knew after returning from a shopping trip, where she had purchased Christmas gifts for a local charity.
James Dunning retired in 2005 after serving 20 years as the sheriff of Alexandria.
