Crime History: Long Island son kills family

On this day, Nov. 13, in 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed his father, mother, two brothers and two sisters in the real life inspiration behind the “The Amityville Horror.” DeFeo, 23, claimed that voices in his head had urged him to kill. He was convicted was sentenced to six consecutive sentences of 25 years to life.

Thirteen months after the killings, George Lutz bought the Dutch Colonial house on 112 Ocean Ave. in Long Island.

After deciding something was wrong with their home, George and Kathy Lutz carried out a blessing. George held a silver crucifix, and they recited the Lord’s Prayer, and George allegedly heard a chorus of voices saying, “Will you stop?!”

The Lutzes fled their home after 28 days.

“The Amityville Horror” remains one of the most popular haunting accounts in American folklore.
