‘Get rid of her!: Secret recording of Trump ordering firing of Ukraine ambassador

President Trump appeared to ask associates to fire then-Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch in a newly reviewed recording.

The recording, obtained by ABC News, captures Trump talking at an April 30, 2018, dinner in Trump International Hotel. In the recording, two Giuliani associates inform the president that the ambassador has been talking badly about him. "Get rid of her!" the president responded. "Get her out tomorrow. I don't care. Get her out tomorrow. Take her out. Okay? Do it."

Lev Parnas, who was one of the associates in the recording, appears to tell Trump: "The biggest problem there, I think where we need to start, is we gotta get rid of the ambassador. She's still left over from the Clinton administration," he said. "She's basically walking around telling everybody, 'Wait. He's gonna get impeached. Just wait.'"

The recording was made by Rudy Giuliani associate Igor Fruman, according to sources. Yovanovitch was recalled as ambassador in April of 2019. She testified in private and public impeachment hearings for the House.

Sen. Chuck Schumer responded to the ABC News report of the recording, saying it reinforced the pattern of "despicable treatment" against the ambassador. "The granularity of the description of the despicable treatment of this prized public servant stuck in people's minds again," Schumer told reporters Friday. "Yovanovich was terribly treated."

Sen. Lindsey Graham dismissed reports of the recording as unimportant. "The president can fire any ambassador he wants," the South Carolina Republican said Friday. "I can give you many examples of ambassadors who have been removed because they have lost confidence in the president."
