Greene goes after Trump for taking AIPAC money as GOP approval of Israel stays steady

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is picking a new war with President Donald Trump, this time over donations the president has received from pro-Israel lobbying groups.

In a post to X, Greene highlighted that she has taken zero donations from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. The PAC is known for donating huge sums to both Democrats and Republicans and has been key in influencing the United States’s foreign policy approach to the Jewish nation.

But Greene has been a staunch opponent of AIPAC and its pouring of cash into elections. On Monday, she did a side-by-side comparison showing her taking zero dollars from “pro-Israel interest groups” and Trump receiving over $230 million, based on individual expenditures and campaign contributions filed with the Federal Election Commission.

“I AM AMERICA FIRST. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” Greene wrote.

Her post came in response to a Truth Social post the president levied against the congresswoman after she gave an interview with CBS News’s 60 Minutes. Trump said Greene “reminds me of a Rotten Apple.”

“Marjorie is not AMERICA FIRST or [Make America Great Again], because nobody could have changed her views so fast, and her new views are those of a very dumb person,” the president wrote.

Greene has insisted that she is speaking out loud the thoughts and opinions that several Republicans privately hold about Trump’s administration and his emphasis on foreign policy over domestic policy. Her split with the president over the Jeffrey Epstein files saw her get considerable support from conservatives, who have long pressed for the release of the information related to the deceased financier.

But her decision to go after Israel and AIPAC may not be as much of a rallying point as the Epstein files, given the GOP is largely keeping pro-Israel sentiments, per recent polling. Greene was one of the few Republicans to come out and publicly call Israel’s war against Hamas a genocide.

In July, a Gallup poll found that just 32% of Americans approved of Israel’s military action in Gaza, which has killed thousands of Palestinians, mainly civilians. But the survey found that Americans were significantly divided by party over Israel’s actions, with 71% of Republicans approving of Israel’s decisions concerning Gaza, up from 66% in September 2024.

A Manhattan Institute survey released on Monday found that a majority of the current GOP, 55%, say that Israel is an important, effective U.S. ally. Among new Republicans joining the party, 24% hold negative views on Israel, and 39% believe Israel is an ally.

As of Dec. 1, Trump’s strong issue approval is on the handling of the Israel-Palestinian conflict, with 48%, per Real Clear Politics. It is the only issue where he has a positive net approval.

SECOND PHASE OF ISRAEL-HAMAS CEASEFIRE TO BEGIN ‘VERY SHORTLY,’ NETANYAHU SAYS

The latest polling from Harvard-Harris on the issue of Israel and Hamas found a significant spike in approval for Trump following the peace deal brokered by his administration. According to the survey, 71% were in favor, including 57% of Democrats. Prior to the deal, his approval rating regarding his handling of the conflict in the Middle East was in the negatives, ranging from negative 10 to negative 25 net approval.

The president plans to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Dec. 29 to discuss phase two of the ceasefire in Gaza. The first phase went into effect in early October.
