Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said on Tuesday that she “feels sorry” for President Donald Trump, calling him “so hateful.”
After Trump directed new criticisms at Greene in an interview with Politico published on Tuesday, the Georgia Republican echoed rhetoric usually seen from across the aisle.
“I feel very sorry for President Trump. I genuinely do. It has to be a hard place for someone that is constantly so hateful and puts so much vitriol, name-calling, and really tells lies about people in order to try to get his way or win some kind of fight,” Greene said, when asked on CNN about the president’s latest comments.
“And I think that’s exactly what’s wrong in America today. That’s what’s wrong in this toxic political environment that has ripped our country apart,” she added.
Greene then repeated her claim that Trump’s designation of her as a traitor had led to death threats against her and her family.
“We had a pipe bomb threat on my home, a pipe bomb threat on my family, construction company, and staff, and had multiple pizza doxings, but the serious one was the direct death threats on my son,” she said.
Greene’s latest comments, focusing on denouncing Trump’s “hate,” mark a continuation of the once hard-line conservative’s shift in rhetoric, following an explosive feud with the president. The comments were triggered by Trump bashing the congresswoman over her criticism of his international dealings.
TRUMP SAYS HE HAS WATCHED VENEZUELA BOAT STRIKE VIDEO, FLOATS FURTHER ACTION
“I’ve watched stupid people like Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Greene, or some people call her Taylor Greene. Some people call her Taylor ‘Brown’ because green sometimes turns to brown, which isn’t nice, but I’ve watched her say that he spends too much time on foreign [trips] — when I go on a trip, I only have one place in mind: It’s the United States,” he said.
Greene claimed the pair’s fallout was due to her advocacy for the release of documents related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, while Trump claimed it was because he declined to endorse her run for Georgia governor.
