President Trump said the Republican National Convention will take place in person, but encouraged the Democratic National Committee to cancel its gathering to "save the money."
"We're going to have a convention," Trump told Washington Examiner columnist Salena Zito before an event at Owens & Minor Distribution Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania. "I'm a traditionalist. But we'll have to see. You know, like everything else. But I think we'll be in good shape by that time."
The Republican National Convention is set to be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, in late August. The Democratic National Convention, which is set to be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was scheduled to take place in July but was postponed until Aug. 17. The Democratic National Committee said it is considering holding a virtual convention to keep people safe from the coronavirus. Trump encouraged the move and joked that it could save them some money.
"I think that's a good move when you have [Joe] Biden as a candidate," Trump said. "I think it's a good move for them. Let them save money."
Trump noted that North Carolina is "in good shape" to hold the convention but noted his concern that Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper may interfere with plans to hold the convention.
"[North Carolina's] got a Democrat governor, so we have to be a little bit careful with that because they're playing politics," he said.
