The Department of Justice on Tuesday announced charges against a Louisiana man who allegedly killed a U.S. marshal on Monday during a standoff in the man’s bedroom.

Clarence Frazier Jr., 48, was charged with the murder of Deputy U.S. Marshal Drew Hanson after Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office and U.S. marshals attempted to execute a warrant at Frazier’s Alexandria, Louisiana, home.

The scene unfolded on Monday when law enforcement officers approached Frazier’s home to apprehend him for failing to appear in court to stand trial the same day on a charge of sexual battery with a person with infirmities.

Rapides Parish officers and marshals entered Frazier’s home, making their presence and purpose known before they forced entry to the house, the DOJ said in a release. Upon entering, officers found Frazier barricaded in his bedroom. From the barricade, Frazier fired at police and hit Hanson, who later died as a result of his injuries, the DOJ said.

Frazier then stood his ground, which resulted in a standoff with police before he was apprehended. If convicted for the killing of Hanson, Frazier faces life in prison.

“Tragically, the defendant’s alleged actions claimed the life of a dedicated law enforcement officer who was simply doing his duty,” acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement. “The alleged perpetrator is now in custody and will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Our thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Marshal Hanson’s family and the entire law enforcement community mourning his loss. Drew paid the ultimate price while protecting our communities.”

The FBI is assisting the Rapides Parish sheriffs in the investigation of Hanson’s death, Director Kash Patel said in the release.

“We will commit our full force of resources to conduct a thorough investigation with our partners at the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Justice to ensure the individual responsible for this horrific act is brought to justice,” Patel said. “The FBI sends our prayers to Deputy Hanson’s family, friends, and our partners at the U.S. Marshal’s service.”
