NATO chief: No assistance for Israel if Iran attacks

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg addresses the summer session of NATO Parliamentary Assembly that is largely focused on ensuring European security amid steps taken by Russia that are seen as destabilizing.
Jens Stoltenberg, NATO’s secretary-general, said in an interview that because Israel is not a member of NATO, its “security guarantee” doesn’t apply to the country.

The head of NATO said the alliance would not aid Israel in the event of an attack by Iran, according to reports.

Jens Stoltenberg, NATO’s secretary-general, told the German magazine Der Spiegel that because Israel is not a member of NATO, its “security guarantee” doesn’t apply to the country, according to the Associated Press.

NATO is also not involved in conflicts in the Middle East or peace efforts there, Stoltenberg added.

Tensions between Israel and Iran have recently escalated. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has recently ramped up his criticisms of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which President Trump announced the U.S. would be withdrawing from last month.
