NBC anchor suggests poor crowds in Iowa spell trouble for Biden

.

NBC News correspondent Katy Tur questioned Joe Biden’s support in Iowa after reporting lackluster crowds at the former vice president’s campaign events.

“Biden and [Pete] Buttigieg have basically had this state to themselves along with [Andrew] Yang and a couple others,” Tur said. “Why is Buttigieg starting to surge and Biden not surging? What is going on with his support?”

Other leading Democratic primary candidates for president are busy in Washington, D.C., presiding over the Senate impeachment trial of President Trump.

This has created an opening for non-Senate Democrats, Tur said, but only some are seizing the opportunity.

“Over the weekend, [Elizabeth] Warren, [Bernie] Sanders, Buttigieg all got over a thousand people at rallies, Biden got a couple hundred,” Tur reported. “What does that mean for his support going forward?”

A new Iowa poll shows Biden in the lead at 23%, ahead of a surging Sanders, who 21% of likely Iowa caucus-goers say is their first choice.

The Iowa caucuses, the first Democratic presidential electoral contest of 2020, will take place Monday.
