Ohio city councilwoman sorry for posting US map calling GOP states ‘Dumbf–kistan’

A recent Facebook post by a city councilwoman in a small blue-collar Ohio city resulted in a wave of backlash and an apology this week.

Yvonne Harper, a left-leaning member of the Toledo city council and often detractor of President Trump on social media, shared a Facebook post Oct. 6 with a photo of the United States of America divided into either blue or red states.

The blue states were labeled “United States of America,” while the red states were labeled “Dumbfuckistan.”

The post, which was made on her personal Facebook account and has since been deleted, was published the same day as Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed by the Senate.

“I listen to the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to be sworn in as a Supreme Court Justice,” Harper said in an apology letter posted to her page two days later. “I admit that I did leave the curse words on it but only to get voters out there no matter what.”

In similar posts over the last several weeks, Harper applauded Democrats and encouraged people in Toledo to register to vote and become active participants in the midterm elections.

“I have never ran away from the statement that I have made,” Harper said of the map she shared. “I stand up. I won’t hide from my comments.”

In several comments on her clarification post, angry supporters of the Trump and Kavanaugh shamed Harper, telling her to resign or calling for her to be removed.

Only 38 percent of Lucas County, Ohio, in which Toledo is located, voted for Trump in 2016. Trump ultimately won Ohio, garnering 51 percent of the vote statewide.

Harper did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment.
