Deadline day: Today last chance for Californians to register to vote in midterm elections

Monday is the last day before the midterm elections to register to vote in California, a state that has 52 House seats and one Senate seat up for grabs.

The state is also voting on its governor and several propositions to create new laws, such as whether to allow sports betting. Voters who miss the deadline get one final chance on Election Day, when they can ask for a provisional ballot at a polling center and sign up in person.

Prior to the pandemic, voters had two options in California: Go to a pre-designated polling place, or use the mail to return an absentee ballot. This changed in 2020 to allow ballot drop-offs at thousands of secure boxes around the state. It also made ballot harvesting legal.

Ballots and voter guides have already been mailed to residents who are registered. However, latecomers can find candidate and proposition information on the California secretary of state website. Voters can also view their profile on the site, which lists how and when they voted.

California has 21.8 million registered voters out of 26.8 million people who are eligible. This is a rate of 81%, which is a 6% jump over the 2018 election, the secretary of state’s website reported.
