Former Republican Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl has been diagnosed with dementia, he announced in a statement on Tuesday.

The longtime public servant completed four full terms in the House from 1987 to 1995 and three full terms in the Senate from 1995 to 2013. He then briefly returned to the upper chamber in 2018 to fill the unexpired term of the late Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain. Kyl, 83, said in a statement that he “was blessed to represent the people of Arizona in Congress.”
