Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams came under fire Wednesday after appearing to suggest that abortion is an economic issue and that getting abortions can help alleviate the burden of inflation.

Abrams, who lost the race for Georgia governor in 2018, made the comments during her appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe after she was challenged on the importance of abortion compared to the crippling inflation occurring under President Joe Biden’s administration.

“Having children is why you’re worried about your price for gas. It’s why you’re concerned about how much food costs,” she said.

“For women, this is not a reductive issue,” she continued. “You can’t divorce being forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy from the economic realities of having a child.”

Georgians need to have conversations to recognize how having children affects their economic lives, according to Abrams.

“Women, half the population, especially those of childbearing age, they understand that having a child is absolutely an economic issue,” Abrams said.
