A retired Wisconsin judge was shot and killed by a man carrying a hit list that targeted state political figures, according to a new report.

Police responded to the home of former Juneau County Judge John Roemer, who retired from the bench in 2017, around 6:30 a.m. Friday after receiving reports of two gunshots being fired. Roemer was identified as the victim who had been shot and killed, sources familiar with the incident told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

“We believe this was a targeted incident,” state Attorney General Josh Kaul told reporters. “Because it’s an ongoing investigation, we’re not going to go into the details of the information that’s available, but so far, the information that’s been gathered indicates it was targeted and that the targeting was based on some sort of court case or court cases.”

Police responded after receiving a call from someone who fled from inside the home once shots were fired. Negotiators attempted to speak with the suspect before entering the home at 10:17 a.m., according to officials.

Once inside, officers found Roemer dead. Another 56-year-old man found in the house was critically injured from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Kaul said. The man, who appears to be the suspect, was taken to the hospital and is currently receiving treatment.

Officials found a hit list belonging to the suspect, which named the 68-year-old former judge as one of the targets. The suspect is believed to be part of a militia, a source told local outlet WTMJ.

“The individual who is the suspect appears to have had other targets as well that appear to be related to the judicial system,” Kaul said. “At this point, we are not aware of any evidence indicating that there is any active danger to other individuals. Those who may have been other targets have been notified of that.”

The suspect has not yet been publicly identified by police, and officials declined to reveal who else was named on the hit list.

The Washington Examiner contacted the Wisconsin Attorney General’s Office and the Juneau County Sheriff’s Office but did not receive a response.
