Most say Hunter Biden scandal serious, but won’t prompt impeachment

Nearly 7 in 10 voters believe reports about President Joe Biden shielding first son Hunter from investigators is a serious scandal, but they also believe he’ll get away with it.

In the latest Rasmussen Reports survey, just 40% believe that it is likely that the scandal will lead to an impeachment drive against the president. Some 55% said impeachment is not likely.

The survey, shared with Secrets, followed reports that a whistleblower has claimed the president’s team has blocked an IRS inquiry into Hunter Biden’s controversial financial deals, some that apparently include his father and extended family.

The IRS agent said in a letter to Congress that an investigation of Hunter Biden has been stalled by “preferential treatment and politics.”

In another case, a woman who claims Hunter Biden fathered a child with her has suggested that the president is letting his son live in the White House to avoid being served legal documents in the case.

Rasmussen said that the scandal has captured the attention of the country, bad timing for a president who just announced his plans to run for reelection. The pollster said that 78% are following the story about Hunter, who is the central figure in the family’s financial scandals.

Overall, 69% of likely voters said that the most recent IRS scandal is serious. That even includes a majority, 53%, of Democrats.

Rasmussen said in its analysis:

“Majorities of every political category – 82% of Republicans, 53% of Democrats and 71% of unaffiliated voters – believe the accusation of ‘preferential treatment’ in the Hunter Biden IRS investigation is at least a somewhat serious scandal. More than two-thirds (68%) of Republicans and nearly half (46%) of unaffiliated voters say the scandal is Very Serious, as do 30% of Democrats.

“However, partisan differences in belief about the seriousness of the Hunter Biden IRS scandal are not reflected in expectations of impeachment. Forty-four percent (44%) of Democrats, 43% of Republicans and 30% of unaffiliated voters think it’s at least somewhat likely the investigation of Hunter Biden is likely to lead Congress to impeach President Biden.”
