"The President is grateful for Tom's commitment to the safety and security of our great country," press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement to the Washington Examiner.

President Trump's homeland security adviser Tom Bossert resigned from the West Wing on Tuesday, the White House confirmed in a statement.

"The President is grateful for Tom's commitment to the safety and security of our great country," press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement to the Washington Examiner.

Bossert, who played a key role coordinating the adminstration's response to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma last summer, has been with the White House since Trump first entered office.

"Tom led the White House's efforts to protect the homeland from terrorist threats, strengthen our cyber defenses, and respond to an unprecedented series of natural disasters," Sanders said. "President Trump thanks him for his patriotic service and wishes him well."

His resignation comes just days after he appeared on ABC's "This Week" to fervently defend the president's deployment of National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen praised Bossert in a statement.

"Since the beginning of this Administration, Tom Bossert has provided wise counsel to the President on Homeland security issues. Over the last fifteen months I have enjoyed working with Tom on a range of current and emerging threats to our nation - particularly in cyber security and disaster response," she said.

"We at DHS thank him for his partnership and service and wish him the best as he takes new steps in his career."
