Pope Leo XIV made history as the first American pontiff on Thursday, making his debut with a speech to the faithful in St. Peter’s Square.
The new Chicago-born pope, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, is also the first pontiff whose first language is modern English. The England-born Pope Adrian IV (1154-1159), the last English-speaking pope, spoke Middle English, a language largely indecipherable to modern English speakers.
