Albertans voted overwhelmingly to remain a part of Canada in Monday’s independence referendum, an outcome that had been consistently indicated by polling.

Elections Alberta said that with 1.5 million votes counted, 76% were for remaining in Canada, while roughly 24% backed independence. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney celebrated the results, saying, “Albertans and all Canadians will move forward together with renewed purpose and high ambition.”
