President Trump on Wednesday congratulated Rep. Martha Roby, R-Ala., for winning her Republican primary race, and said it was his late endorsement of her that put her over the top.
“Congratulations to Martha Roby of The Great State of Alabama on her big GOP Primary win for Congress,” Trump tweeted. “My endorsement came appropriately late, but when it came the ‘flood gates’ opened and you had the kind of landslide victory that you deserve. Enjoy!”

Roby’s primary was closely watched because she was seen as someone who wasn’t sufficiently loyal to Trump. During the 2016 campaign, she called on Trump to exit the race after a tape was released in which Trump was heard using what he later called “locker room talk.”
Roby won by a 2-1 margin, which had some political observers saying her win was a sign Republicans don’t have to be in lock-step with Trump to win.
Still, her win did come with Trump’s late endorsement.
“She is in a Republican Primary run-off against a recent Nancy Pelosi voting Democrat,” Trump tweeted before the vote. “I fully endorse Martha for Alabama 2nd Congressional District!”
