There are many reasons why Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 presidential election. One of which is the base not rallying behind Clinton after she won the nomination to ensure a Democratic victory during the general election.
That is one fear that Antjuan Seawright, a Democratic strategist and CEO and founder of Blueprint Strategy, has going into the 2020 election.
“Say what you want about the Republican Party and their leader, Donald Trump. They were lock-step, rock-solid behind their nominee regardless of what he did, said, or tweeted,” Seawright told the Washington Examiner. “The one thing we have to do that we did not do well with in 2016, all facets of our party have to come together and rally behind our nominee.”
He continued: “My biggest concern is that we will not unite strongly — all facets of our party — around whoever wins our nomination post the convention.”
Of course, Democrats could nominate the best candidate they can come up with, but it will be for naught if they don’t have a cohesive message.
“Our message has to speak to the hearts and minds of the American voter, and it has to be focused on quality of life issues,” Seawright said. “We can talk until the cows turn blue in the face about how bad Donald Trump is, the things he tweets, but that’s not going to move the needle for Democrats.”
