Based on a single bogus study, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now recommending that even fully vaccinated adults must wear a mask in indoor public spaces. Now, Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser has decided to force the issue for those living and working in the district, even though there were only four coronavirus casualties in the entirely unmasked month of July.
The new indoor mask mandate, which becomes effective Saturday, is both fascistic and antithetical to science.
Statistically speaking, you’re more than 4 times as likely to die of homicide this year in Washington (its 100th murder victim was killed at the beginning of this month — not that Bowser seemed concerned) as you are to die of COVID. With 3 in 5 adults and 4 in 5 seniors vaccinated, the district has achieved total herd immunity, and the empirical data confirms this. Of nearly 400,000 district residents fully vaccinated, just four, all of whom were elderly or seriously immunocompromised, have died this month. This is, as CDC Director Rochelle Walensky has said, solely a pandemic of the unvaccinated. In places with D.C.-level herd immunity, the pandemic is waning even for the unvaccinated.
Yet after more than a year of this lunacy, Bowser insists upon punishing those of us who masked up for a year and then got the jab. The justification for this is that we must protect those who refuse to get a free and widely available vaccination. As a moral matter, it is an absolute infringement upon liberty to ask the fully vaccinated to go to this trouble just to protect those who refuse to protect themselves. As a practical matter, it’s a farce. To prevent our one weekly COVID death, we’re going to punish the people who did everything right?
It’s not as though Bowser actually believes that every life is worth saving. If that were the case, Bowser would be deploying more police instead of defunding the police and partying in the streets with Black Lives Matter activists. Instead, Bowser is taking what she probably realizes is going to be her last chance to hang on to her pandemic powers. She won’t willingly give us our liberties back — instead, it will be up to us to take it.
