In 2020, when every left-wing politician wanted to atone for the Democratic Party’s history of slavery, segregation, and other acts of racism in our country’s history, many on the Left decided to target Christopher Columbus. Throughout the nation, many Columbus statues were toppled or vandalized as the Left condemned one of history’s most influential figures to cancel culture. Philadelphia was no different. Jim Kenney, the city’s mayor, ordered a plywood box built around the statue because he felt the statue was a threat to “public safety.”
Two years later, and the statue is still in the box. On Friday, a city councilman ordered the box painted green, white, and red to reflect the colors of the Italian flag. On Sunday, the city held its annual Columbus Day parade, which passed by the newly painted boxed statue.
PHILADELPHIANS VOTE FOR MORE CRIME
Yet, Kenney might actually be onto something. Using his logic, if “public safety” threats necessitate constructing large plywood boxes around things to mitigate such risks, then the city should build a box around the district attorney’s and mayor’s offices. Both are responsible for more death, destruction, and violence than anything involving Philadelphia’s Columbus statue. After all, their toxic, radical, left-wing policies have resulted in public safety concerns of unprecedented levels, as violence and murder have plagued the city since they have been in office.
Over the last few years, Philadelphia set records for homicides, carjackings, and other acts of violent crime. Larry Krasner, the city’s Soros-funded, woke, left-wing district attorney, has left the town in disarray as his criminal justice reform policies have prioritized criminals over innocent people. And, up until he recently realized the disaster his city has become, Kenney endorsed Krasner and his disastrous policies. Both men have significant blood on their hands, as their left-wing ideals have devastated the city’s black and brown communities, with innocent people, often as young as 2 years old, getting shot or murdered.
But, of all these horrific crimes, none of them are because of the Columbus statue. Krasner and Kenney are such a threat to public safety that more people have died due to their existence in Philadelphia than the city’s Columbus statue, which has existed since Oct. 12, 1876.
Suffice it to say, a box around Krasner’s and Kenney’s offices would be more beneficial to the residents, especially the city’s minorities, than the one around a 15th-century explorer. The Columbus statue has never put murderers and criminals on the streets; Krasner and Kenney did.
