Like much of what the NFL does anymore at the crossroads of public relations and cultural warfare, the nation’s preeminent sports league has once again taken the liberal, progressive (though I would argue they should truly be called regressive) side in its cultural warfare campaigns. A social media video of a male cheerleader for the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles received quite the reaction online. As an Eagles fan, this is nothing new since the Eagles’ first male cheerleader debuted in 2019. Nevertheless, the response was as one would expect: People don’t want this.
I have no doubt that male NFL cheerleaders are the warped brainchild of a liberal, Democratic, socialist ideologue who kneels at the altar of diversity, equity, and inclusion. To them, people like them, and of their ilk, having effeminate-looking men, frolic around on the sideline, swaying their hips like a woman while waving pom-poms, at a stadium on NFL gamedays is “inclusive.” In reality, it’s stupid, unnecessary, and unwanted. There was no demand for this. It is not something anyone was clamoring for. Nobody wants effeminate-looking men dancing around and waving pom-poms as NFL cheerleaders.

“NFL cheerleaders are back in the spotlight this week because a bunch of dudes dancing like women in tights are going viral,” Jillian Anderson King, a former Washington Redskins cheerleader ambassador, told the Washington Examiner.
Furthermore, it is arguably yet another attack by men on sporting opportunities meant for women. Nothing against male cheerleaders. The NCAA has them at every one of their games every weekend. But in those circumstances, they are opportunities for men in cheerleading — not men sashaying around. If I had to guess, it probably took a cheerleading job away from a woman, because there’s no way that there was not a single woman applying for an Eagles cheerleading job who was not as good, or better, than the man who was chosen.
“Hundreds of incredibly talented women audition for these teams,” King said. “Many have trained their entire lives for one of the very few professional opportunities available to dancers and cheerleaders after high school or college. I have friends who cheered for the Jets, Chargers, Ravens, and other NFL teams. I know how competitive these auditions are and what earning one of those spots means.”
“So, I’m going to call it like I see it,” she added. “These men are not consistently beating out hundreds of women because they are better dancers. These spots are being given to men because organizations want to prove how progressive they are.”
“And who is that actually serving?” she asked. “It is not the players, and it is not the traditional NFL fan base. I’ve spent enough time around both to know that. And what really bothers me is that women are expected to step aside, give their spots to men, and say nothing about it. They are expected to just take it, and if they object, somehow they are the problem.”
Former three-time NFL captain Jack Brewer echoed similar sentiments. He called his former league “soft” and the presence of male NFL cheerleaders a feminization of the league. He ascribed it to another vastly important social issue plaguing the country, fatherlessness.
“As a former NFL team captain, I never imagined I’d see the toughest sport in the world turn so soft,” Brewer said. “The push to feminize the game is a direct result of a country full of little boys growing up without real fathers. Single moms and homosexual men are raising a feminine generation of boys. American dads have abandoned their role in building masculine, God-fearing young men.”
Both Brewer and King are right. This would have never been accepted in the NFL of yesteryear. In fact, when the same Philadelphia Eagles tried to have two male cheerleaders on their team way back in 1984, the two were essentially given the Philadelphia “boo” out of existence. They performed throughout the 1984 season, but the extremely vocal negative fan reaction prompted Eagles ownership to rethink it and realize that NFL cheerleading should be for women.
“There are already so few professional opportunities for female dancers,” King said. “Making an NFL squad can be the culmination of years of training and the opportunity of a lifetime. Women should not be expected to give up some of those already limited spots in the name of proving how progressive an organization can be. Men can add a lot to cheerleading. I know that firsthand. But men having a place in cheerleading does not mean women should have to give up theirs.”
King went further in her analysis of the situation, touching on a variety of social and cultural matters plaguing the country.

“Pretending guys can be girls falls right in line with a pattern we have watched across the NFL for years of bowing to a woke activist culture that is not reflective of the people who actually made football what it is,” King said. “We have watched it with team names and rebranding, kneeling during the national anthem, additional anthem presentations, political messaging, woke halftime entertainment, and now the continued redefining of what were historically female cheer and dance squads, including transgender performers.”
“I watched that transformation firsthand with the Redskins,” she added. “The name is gone. The traditional cheerleading squad I knew is gone. The organization is completely different from the one I worked for.”
I have absolutely no reservation in saying that the presence of men among NFL cheerleading squads is the result of the Left’s decadeslong attack on the country’s culture. I don’t have any experience in the NFL, like Brewer, or on an NFL cheerleading squad, like King. Still, I have observed the transformation of the league from weekly entertainment on Sundays in the fall to the massive entertainment-industrial complex and indoctrination center it has evolved into today.
It uses the massive attention it receives from the millions of fans around the country to not-so-subliminally promote left-wing, socialist cultural and political messaging. Whether it was the Colin Kaepernick-inspired kneeling for the national anthem or the Black Lives Matter propaganda the league started spewing in the wake of the riots caused by the death of George Floyd in 2020, to other liberal, regressive ideals, it has since then used its mass appeal to indoctrinate and propagandize. And, unfortunately, the league is so successful that it knows it can get away with it.
The male NFL cheerleader is the latest iteration (which has been around for several years now). But from the fan’s perspective, given that I have been an Eagles fan since birth — and probably in the womb if one is familiar with Eagles fandom in the City of Brotherly Love — I can safely say that the presence of an effeminate-looking man, waving pom-poms on the sideline as an NFL cheerleader, is something few, if any, NFL fans actually want.
