The Simpsons has produced what is easily the most embarrassing #Resistance fan fiction of the Trump era.
The Fox show aired a promotional video this week focusing on the president’s ongoing feud with ultra-liberal freshmen Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib. The brief clip, which is West Side Story-themed, tries to portray the congresswomen as heroic characters while also showing Trump as a fat slob with bad hair.
Because that is apparently the best that the show’s writing staff could do.
When I say the clip is the cringiest bit of #Resistance fan fiction produced since Jan. 2017, I am not exaggerating. It is worse than the all the conspiratorial John Schindler, Seth Abramson, and Louise Mensch tweets put together. It is worse than the Krassenstein brothers' children's book imagining former special counsel Robert Mueller as a Chippendales dancer. It is worse even than Saturday Night Live’s Christmas tribute to Mueller and his two-year investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election (yes, that really happened).
I am sharing the Simpsons’ unintentionally humiliating and only unintentionally funny video here only because misery loves company. If I have to sit through this fremdschämen-inducing train-wreck, then so do you:
The parody is so ineffectual, so incompetently written, and so toothless that it makes me wonder whether it was authored by Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign alumni. The lyrics alone sink this awful attempt at Trump-era political satire.
“They shouldn’t be in America,” Trump sings. “No one but me in America / No taxes for me in America / This is my natural hair-ica.” Woof. Oh, and it's all so badly performed.
You know what? I have changed my mind. This is not #Resistance fan fiction. This is #Resistance porn, and it turns out to be more debasing than the real thing.
