More than 30 journalists have been killed in Ukraine since Russia invaded in late February, according to a Ukrainian government leader.

On June 6, a day Ukrainians celebrate as Journalist’s Day, Minister of Culture and Information Policy Oleksandr Tkachenko said 32 reporters have died in the war.

“This year’s Journalist’s Day has a special taste of bitterness,” he said on Telegram. “The fourth month of full-scale war — and we lost 32 journalists. … In 8 years of war, we lost even more. Eternal memory to our fighters of the advanced information front.”

French journalist Frederic Leclerc-Imhoff was killed last week after being hit with shrapnel. Before that, Fox News foreign correspondent Benjamin Hall was severely injured, while cameraman Pierre Zakrzewski and Ukrainian producer Oleksandra Kuvshynova were killed in mid-March while covering the war. Hall later revealed that he lost half of his leg, his foot, and the use of one of his eyes.

“Journalists of various media groups, who are now working on the united front of the single news marathon, among other things, showed their ability to negotiate, cooperate and thus put above all the only main goal — our victory,” he added.

The deaths of nearly three dozen journalists are a small sample of the staggering death toll in Ukraine. The Ukrainian military has said Russia’s death toll exceeds 30,000, while “at least tens of thousands” of civilians have been killed, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
