The War Department launched Grok, SpaceXAI founder Elon Musk’s chatbot, for military use more than a year after signing a contract with Starshield AI.
Starshield AI’s Grok for Government is Musk’s flagship attempt to assist the U.S. government with its adoption of artificial intelligence. A press release from the Pentagon said the initiative would expand “the suite of frontier AI capabilities on GenAI.mil, the Department’s premier generative AI platform.” The AI is “engineered for secure, consistent enterprise use” and accredited for Controlled Unclassified Information at Impact Level 5.

“Starshield AI’s Grok for Government will provide the warfighter with immediate productivity gains, stronger knowledge continuity and more secure and efficient collaboration,” the Pentagon press release reads. “By bringing Starshield AI’s Grok to GenAI.mil, Department personnel will gain access to advanced capabilities, including deep-thinking inference, adaptive reasoning modes… customizable workspaces, persistent projects and reusable ‘playbooks’ that capture and scale institutional knowledge.”
The launch will enable the military to “execute missions faster and with greater precision” in areas ranging from market research analysis to supply chain management, according to the release.
Over half of the Pentagon’s 3 million personnel already use GenAI.mil, according to the release, and the department plans to continue to expand the scale of the military’s use of AI.
The initiative was secured last year, when the Pentagon also signed contracts with Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI, with each receiving $200 million.
Musk’s AI company has fared well due to his usually positive relationship with President Donald Trump, unlike the combative relationship he has with Anthropic.

Grok is viewed as one of the most promising AI tools due to its training on X’s data. A problem encountered by AI developers is that engineers have run out of data to plug into AI models to further develop their skills. While other models must spend time and effort creating synthetic data, Grok has a constant inflow of new data to work with through the massive amount of content produced by X users.
Despite its promise, Grok is also one of the most controversial AI models. Last year, a tweak to its code to allow it to make “politically incorrect” statements went awry. Within a day, the chatbot was praising Adolf Hitler, endorsing a new Holocaust, and threatening to sexually assault at least one user. Adjustments since have prevented another incident of equal severity, but it has led to some lasting doubts about its capabilities.
