The Massachusetts government started sending out $500 checks to an estimated 300,000 low-income workers on Monday. The checks are part of the second round of stimulus payments provided by the state’s COVID-19 Essential Employee Premium Pay program.

“The Legislature was proud to establish this program through our [American Rescue Plan Act],” House Speaker Ron Mariano said on Twitter. “The essential workers who worked to keep the Commonwealth running during the height of the pandemic deserve nothing less.”
The program will provide these payments to eligible citizens who lived in Massachusetts on or before June 15, 2021, or were part-time residents between June 1 and June 15, 2021, according to the government website.

Eligible recipients must also have earned at least $13,500 but have a total income below 300% of the federal poverty level. This means that the maximum income a single person can make to be eligible is $38,640 for a single person, $52,260 for two filers, $66,880 for three, or $79,500 for four.
Massachusetts is not the only state providing additional stimulus payments to those in need. Maine and New Mexico residents are eligible to receive stimulus checks as their state leaders attempt to provide support amid decades-high inflation.
