Besides enjoying the occasional stint as a reality TV star, another one of retired NBA player John Salley‘s passions is food.
He prefers meals that are vegan, organic and kosher. And while getting vegan, organic and kosher school lunches on students’ trays across the country may seem like a reach, Salley’s at least trying to push members of Congress in a more veggie-friendly direction.
Salley, who buddied around with another political name, Patti Blagojevich, in this summer’s reality show “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here,” sent letters Wednesday to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., the chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, urging them to push more vegetarian options.
“As a parent, I’m sure we can all agree that fruits and vegetables are an important part of everyone’s diet — especially our children’s,” Salley penned. “It’s not easy to score points — on the court or in the classroom — when you’re eating a junk food diet packed with fat and cholesterol,” he added.
The NBA champion is pushing the issue now as Congress looks at the Child Nutrition Act, up for reauthorization this year.
