Trio of Southern GOP senators win re-election

Incumbent Republican senators in Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi crushed their Democratic opponents on Tuesday, padding the GOP ranks in the upper chamber on a night when closer contests will take place elsewhere.

Both the major networks and wire services called the races as soon as the polls closed at 8 p.m.

Sens. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, and Thad Cochran of Mississippi each won his race, as expected.

For Cochran, the real drama came in the GOP primary in Mississippi, when he barely defeated challenger Chris McDaniel.
