Founder of gossip site Gawker voices unexpected pro-life views

Gossip and viral news site Gawker is notorious for its irreverent and left-leaning political tone, so it’s a surprise to learn that its founder, Nick Denton, opposes abortion. Or, something like that.

“My politics are that I like to get things done, so I am centrist and, for obvious reasons, I’m socially liberal,” Denton, who is openly gay, told the Daily Beast in a recent interview. “I don’t really believe that the government — or, in fact, any kind of hierarchical organization — is very good at delivering any kind of service.”

Asked about abortion, perhaps the country’s most consistently emotionally charged policy issue since the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, Denton suggested that he doesn’t favor expanded abortion rights.

“There’s no advantage to me of going there,” Denton said, adding, “I don’t have conventional liberal views on abortion, no.”

Denton’s company, Gawker Media, also owns Jezebel, an aggressively liberal women’s-issues blog that often publishes posts in favor of abortion rights.
