Donald Trump’s campaign has signaled that it plans to attack Mexican billionaire and New York Times shareholder Carlos Slim as part of his expanding offense against the newspaper.
Trump will attack Slim as a “foreigner” with interest in electing Democrat Hillary Clinton, according to the Wall Street Journal, citing an adviser to the Trump campaign.
The Journal reported that the Republican nominee may begin his attacks on Friday and that it will be a new way to fight and discredit the paper’s reports this week on women who accused Trump of sexual assault some decades.
Slim and his family own 17 percent of Times shares, according to the Journal.
A spokesperson for Slim denied he was in any way behind the Times’ reporting on Trump. “Of course we aren’t interfering in the U.S. election. We aren’t even active in Mexican politics,” the spokesperson told the Journal.
Slim has, however, donated $250,000 to $500,000 to the Clinton Foundation.
