Illinois man accused of trying to join Islamic State

A federal grand jury has indicted a 19-year-old Illinois man who was arrested en route to Turkey on a charge of supporting terrorism for allegedly trying to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, authorities said Friday.

Mohammed Hamzah Khan was detained Oct. 4 by FBI agents at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport as he was waiting for a flight to Vienna en route to Turkey, authorities said.

If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
